In 1913, Miss Agnes Daves bought the School and a few months later the name was changed to St.Hilary's School for Girls, although the kindergarten was open to both boys and girls. The majority of the older girls were members of the Alderley Edge Guide Company which was one of the first units to form in the country. They played an important part in the war effort - collecting waste paper, rolling bandages for the Red Cross and setting up a laundry service.
In 1920, Miss Daves bought 'Hurst Lea', which not only became her home but also the boarding house. In 1927, Miss Daves retired and Miss Helena Adcock invited Miss Doris Gliddon and Miss Byrom to become joint Principals with her. |
